Student spells 'heron' in regional spelling bee to advance to national level
After surviving words like "aviator," "hollandaise" and "pasteurize," sixth-grader Katie Arthur won the regional spelling bee Saturday after 20 rounds with the correct spelling of "heron." Katie, 12, who attends Lincoln Elementary School in Mount Vernon, decided she wanted to win a spelling bee after she watched her first bee in third grade.
